Lady Hornets Swarm Westwood

BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood Lady Redhawks hosted the Diamond Hornets from Lower Richland High School in a region basketball match Tuesday night. Debbie Stroman’s Hornets had little trouble defeating Westwood, taking the match by a score of 48-21.

The game began with a lot of steals and turnovers, mostly against the Redhawks. Most of the action took place on the Lower Richland end of the court, and Westwood had a hard time mounting any meaningful offense. The Redhawks could only manage to score five points in the first period, while the Hornets scored 19.

The second period was even worse for the hapless Redhawks. They went the first half of the period with no score at all, while the Hornets racked up a healthy and nearly unbeatable lead. Finally Westwood got on the scoreboard with a single field goal by Kaylah Cohen. Lower Richland led 35-7 at halftime.

The remainder of the game would be much closer, with Westwood outscoring the Diamond Hornets in the third period, 7-3. Turnovers became more even, but the points lost in the first half were the Redhawks’ downfall.

The high scorer for the Diamond Hornets, and the high scorer for the game was Breshay Johnson with 16 points. Westwood’s high scorers were the Kaylah Cohen and Kayla Atkins with six points each.

Westwood’s next opponent is the winless A.C. Flora High School, at Flora Friday night.
