BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood Lady Redhawks hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Camden, but fell to the visitors 60-47 in a hard-fought, high scoring game.

The loss drops the Lady Redhawks to 2-7 in the region, and 5-15 overall, while the Lady Bulldogs improve to 4-5 in region play and an even 9-9 for the season overall.

The game got off to a slow start, but saw the Lady Redhawks very much in contention, only trailing by two points to start the second quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs had other plans, however.

Camden turned up the defensive pressure on the Lady Redhawks and extended the lead to double digits just before halftime at 25-14.

Things looked better for the Redhawks in the third quarter, as Kaylan Cohen began to find her shooting touch. Led by Cohen and sophomore guard Taylor Toney, the girls of Westwood were able to cut into the deficit, closing it to single digits and regaining some of the home crowd momentum that had vanished in the first half.

But just as Westwood closed the gap, the sharp-shooting backcourt of Camden sank a few clutch buckets to extend the lead, out of reach of Westwood, and ultimately sealing the 60-47 victory.

The Lady Bulldogs flourished on the offensive side of the ball, with four players scoring in double figures. Sharneece Gary scored a game-high 19 points. Ariyan Massey had 11 points while Brooke Dixon and Treana Perry scored 10 points each.

For the Lady Redhawks, Cohen finished with 12 points. Taylor Toney finished the game with 11 points and Mikeya Matthews and Kayla Atkins finished with nine points each.

Westwood takes on Lower Richland, a team that is a perfect 8-0 in conference play and ranked fourth in the state, Friday. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Friday.
