WINNSBORO – The Fairfield Central Griffins baseball squad, coming off a less than stellar defensive performance Monday night, essentially locked up a second-place finish in Region III 2A with a come from behind 3-2 win over North Central.
Having gone up 1-0 in the fourth, the Griffins suddenly found themselves trailing 2-1 after a towering North Central home run off Fairfield Central’s Stanley McManus in the top of the sixth. But some late-inning heroics by Chris Boyd saved the day, as Boyd collected his third hit of the night with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom half.
McManus went all seven, striking out 10 Knights while giving up just four hits, three walks and one hit batsman.
The Griffins wrap up the regular season with a road trip to Great Falls Friday in non-region play, and will make up a region rainout Monday at Eau Claire. With a second-place finish, the Griffins will likely host in round one of the playoffs, which begin May 1.
