Which is more important: to have the last word or to have the truth spoken?
I expressed the facts and the truth regarding (Interim County Administrator Milton) Pope’s county comparisons report. Fairfield county should be renamed “Taxafield.” I stated that of all the 46 counties our per capita expenditures exceed all others. We employee the greatest percentage of county employees by far and we have the largest recreation budget, three times that of the average. And out here in Western Fairfield we have nothing to show for it.
In spite of the truth and the facts, the Council Chairman, who I honestly believe has no idea of what is going on in this county, actually said I don’t know what I am talking about when I said that we pay more property tax than the people living on Hilton Head Island.
Taxes on my 2007 Chevrolet truck in Taxafield County were $238.65. The same truck on Hilton Head Island would cost me $189. That is a $49.65 difference. So, Mr. Chairman, now the smart thing to do is to lower our taxes instead of denying the facts.
