Ashley at SCPA awards thing copy

Morrey Thomas (right), President of the S.C. Press Association presents Voice feature writer Ashley Ghere with her first place award for Arts & Entertainment Writing during Saturday’s SCPA awards banquet in Myrtle Beach. Ghere’s feature “Takiya Rocks the Runway” was tops in the All Weekly division. “What amazing talent,” judges said of Ghere’s work.

Voice photographer Ross Burton’s photo of Westwood High School’s Kelsey Briggs leaping into the state track finals last spring earned a first place award for Sports Action Photo in the Weekly Over 4,500 Division. “Great action photo,” judges said. “Good tension. Nothing in the background pulls focus away from the central part of the image. Youthful and fun with the facial expression captured on the girl. Face also shows determination. Color good, too.”

Voice editor James Denton, meanwhile, earned first place in the Weekly Over 4,500 Division’s Spot News category for his Dec. 13, 2013 front page story, “Coach sits out big game in jail” about Fairfield Central’s defensive coordinator’s run-in with the law prior to the state title game.

The Voice was also honored with second place awards for editorial writing and government beat reporting, and third place for sports headline writing.
