NEWBERRY – Richard Winn continued their dominance of this early football season by defeating the Newberry Academy Eagles 54-0 Friday at Newberry College.

Richard Winn’s John Coleman started the game with an electrifying 73-yard kickoff return for the game’s first touchdown, giving the Eagles an 8-0 lead after also converting on a 2-point conversion.

Newberry Academy started their opening drive going in reverse. Negative plays on the Newberry drive led to a fumble, which was recovered by Bryant Carvalho. The Richard Winn junior scooped up the loose ball and scampered in for a 5-yard touchdown, increasing the RWA lead to 15-0 early in the first quarter.

Newberry Academy continued to struggle on offense as penalties and the defense of Richard Winn stifled their production. Richard Winn took advantage of Newberry’s misfortunes by scoring on their next possession on a 13-yard touchdown run by Eagle quarterback Gunnar Hensley, pushing Richard Winn’s lead to 22-0 in the middle of the first quarter.

Newberry Academy had no answers for the Richard Winn defense as drive after drive in the first quarter produced zero positive yardage.

Hensley connected with wide receiver Mitch Gibbons on a 15-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter, extending the RWA lead to 29-0. Coleman ended the first quarter onslaught with a 24-yard touchdown run, giving Richard Winn a 36-0 lead.

Richard Winn started the second quarter much as they did in the first with a 50-yard touchdown run by senior Webb Yongue, making the game essentially a done deal with a 42-0 RWA lead. Richard Winn added two late scores for the 54-0 final.

“We are a lot more athletic and faster than we were a year ago, so we want our boys to play at their highest level no matter who play,” RWA head coach Dan Dickerson said. “We still want to be in a better physical and mental state than our opponents. As a coach, I have to make sure to keep them focused on the prize, which is to get back to State.”

Richard Winn hosts Clarendon Hall Friday for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
