WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Academy Eagles took care of business early Friday night as they cruised to a first quarter score of 42-6 over the visiting Cathedral Generals. In the second period, RWA tacked on two more touchdowns and went into halftime leading 56-6.

Per SCISA’s rules, when one team leads by 40 or more points, the game clock runs. The second half of play literally sped to a finish with Cathedral putting another six points on the scoreboard in the third quarter. The final score, 56-12, gave the Eagles their second win of the young season.

The senior tandem of John Coleman and Webb Yongue ignited the Ruff Field scoreboard for 24 points apiece, each scoring four touchdowns. Two of Coleman’s TD’s came from the defensive side of the ball as he picked off two passes and ran them both back for touchdowns of 47 and 65 yards.

Altogether, the Eagle offense racked up 241 rushing yards and 129 in the passing game to account for the lop-sided scoring. Junior Mitchell Gibbons used his kicking skills effectively, going 6 for 7 in extra-point attempts to score six points for the Eagles, and senior Nic Stillwell added two points to the total tally with a 2-point conversion rush of 5 yards.

The Eagle defense was hard at work as well, forcing the opponents into turnovers. In addition to Coleman’s two, Yongue and Peyton Gilbert each snatched an interception, and Christian Christianson recovered a General fumble. Junior Bryant Carvalho and Stillwell led the team with 5 and 4 individual tackles respectively. However, RWA lost 105 yards in penalties and two fumbles.

The Eagles play at home again this coming Friday, Sept. 4, as they host the Crusaders of Laurens Academy. It will also be Hall of Fame night as four new members will be inducted into the second class of RWA’s Athletic Hall of Fame during half time. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
