BLACKVILLE – The rain made the night gloomy and the field nasty. Neither of these things slowed down Richard Winn Academy as they continued their dominance this season with a 50-0 victory over Jefferson Davis. The Eagles scored all of their points in the first half, hanging 36 on J.D. in the first quarter alone.

“We came out a little flat and didn’t play as well as we have been on offense,” RWA head coach Dan Dickerson said. “Our defense continued to play well. This is the third game in a row that the defense has not given up any points. That’s the kind of play we’ll need down the stretch.”

The Eagles started the game with great field position on their opening drive and launched into their punishing ground game. Senior Webb Yongue began the scoring onslaught with a 35-yard touchdown run. A failed 2-point conversion gave the Eagles an early 6-0 lead in the first.

Jefferson Davis never got their offense started as their running game ran smack-dab into an Eagle defense that held the Raiders to negative 95 yards rushing the entire game on 23 attempts.

John Coleman gave Richard Winn a 13-0 lead after a 9-yard touchdown run on RWA’s second possession early in the first quarter. On the next Jefferson Davis possession after the kickoff, the Raiders fumbled in their own end zone giving Richard Winn 2 points from a safety, pushing the Eagle lead to 15-0 lead.

Less than 2 minutes later, Coleman scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard touchdown run, increasing the RWA lead to 22-0.

Less than a minute later, Eagle defender Chris Christianson forced a Jefferson Davis fumble, which was recovered by Sandy Sandifer. That set up Coleman’s third touchdown of the quarter, this one an 8-yard blast to extend the Eagles’ lead to 29-0.

Eagle quarterback Gunnar Hensley ended the explosive first quarter with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Coleman. Coleman’s fourth visit to the end zone in the opening frame gave the Eagles a 36-0 lead.

The Eagles tacked on 14 more points in the second quarter, effectively sealing the deal before the half.

Eagle senior Nic Stillwell scored with an 11-yard interception return early in the second, making the lead 43-0. Yongue ended the second quarter with a 64-yard touchdown run for the 50-0 final.

The Eagles (6-0/4-0) travel to Carolina Academy this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kick.

“Carolina Academy marks the beginning of the difficult half of our season,” Dickerson said. “Carolina, Wardlaw, Greenwood Christian and Andrew Jackson, with W.W. King thrown in for good measure. We will have to play our best if we expect to make to the playoffs for a chance to defend our title.”
