Bette DuPre Pope

obit_bette-pope-copyWINNSBORO – Funeral services for Sarah Elizabeth DuPre Pope, 91, will be held at 12 noon Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Winnsboro conducted by the Rev. Van Pigate and the Rev. Dr. Craig Bailey. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, S.C. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, Dec. 1, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Pope entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016. Born in Walhalla, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Hiram Mason and Sarah Elizabeth Owen DuPre. After graduating from Walhalla High School, she moved to Columbia, S.C., and attended nursing school at the old Columbia Hospital where she earned the degree of Registered Nurse. She later met and married John L. Pope and moved to Winnsboro, S.C., where they established Pope Funeral Home in 1957.

Mrs. Pope, or simply “BIG,” was loved by many, many people. After the death of her daughter Lynda, she helped to rear her grandson John Robert, no doubt her pride and joy. She enjoyed doing whatever she could for him and his friends, treating them to many trips and meals. She also loved her great-grandchildren and looked forward to their visits with her. Bette loved the Gamecocks and was a member of the Gamecock Club for over 50 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Winnsboro and the Huguenot Society in Charleston. Bette served her country in The Army Nurses Corps during WWII. Mrs. Pope will be missed because of the big heart she had for everyone.

She is survived by her only grandson, John Robert Wood (Ashley); two great-grandchildren, Mason and Hayden Wood; one sister, Annie Laura Gauntt; one brother, James Spann DuPre; many nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Patty Roland and Sammie Lee Robinson.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband John Lawrence Pope; her only daughter, Lynda DuPre Pope Wood; and two brothers, Hiram Frank DuPre and Robert O. DuPre.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at NHC Lexington for their continued care and support. They also express sincere appreciation to the staff of Pope Funeral Home, both past and present, for continuing without interruption the daily operation of the business; and thanks to the many families who, for almost 60 years, have entrusted their loved ones to Pope Funeral Home for final disposition with trust, dignity and attention to detail. May God grant us faith and courage to carry on for many years to come.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, 1373 US Highway 34, Winnsboro, S.C. 29180.
