NEWBERRY (Feb. 1, 2017) – The Richard Winn Eagles (4-6, 1-3) went into Newberry Academy (5-13, 1-3) hoping to spoil their senior night. The Eagles from Newberry Academy used turnovers and rebounds to squeeze by Richard Winn 41-30 Tuesday night.

“We let them get a lot of second chance points tonight off the glass,” Richard Winn head coach Joe Pitt said. “Getting out-rebounded in the early parts of the game and eventually in the later parts of the game hurt us and I felt we could never recover from it.”

Newberry Academy caused a lot of early turnovers in the first quarter to jump out to 14-5 lead over Richard Winn as Ty Taylor helped lead the hometown Eagles with 8 points in the opening frame. Richard Winn had plenty of opportunities during the first to cut into Newberry’s lead but missed on numerous open shots.

Richard Winn improved a bit in the second period as they used an 11-point quarter to chip away at their deficit; but Newberry dumped in 12 points to keep RWA at arm’s length. Richard Winn’s Bryant Carvalho scored 6 points in the quarter helping Richard Winn go into halftime down only 26-16.

“Despite us committing a lot of fouls in the first half I thought we had a good chance to come into the second half with a hot streak,” Pitt said.

Richard Winn outscored Newberry Academy 8-7 in the third but could never get the lead down to less than 9 points as Newberry headed into the final quarter up 33-24.

Late into the fourth quarter Richard Winn finally got the Eagle lead down to 7 points, getting some key rebounds that had been lacking for majority of the game.

“Once we got their lead to 7 points I felt we had the ability to get Newberry right where we wanted them, but we just could not get an opportunity to make more of an impact,” Pitt said. “Lots of credit to those guys for getting turnovers and offensive fouls called on us to halt our momentum in the fourth.”

Newberry Academy used late free throws to ice the game 41-30.

Richard Winn was led by Bryant Carvalho with 13 points. He was the only player in double figures for Richard Winn. Richard Winn hosts King Academy Friday.
