Lady Eagles beat Whitmire, fall to Generals

WINNSBORO – The Lady Eagles kicked off the first leg of back-to-back home games with a dominating win against Whitmire on Monday, but on Tuesday they did not have the same success against Thomas Sumter. Richard Winn kept it close early, but the Generals pulled away as the game wore on and left Winnsboro with a 50-39 win.

Hannah Gibbons (21) moves the ball up the court against Whitmire. The Eagles cruised to an easy win over the Wolverines.

The Eagles’ only lead was 3-2 in the beginning moments, but Thomas Sumter’s Aubrey Stoddard put the Generals back up 6-3 with a beautiful four-point play.

Stoddard had a game high 16 points, including seven points from the charity stripe. The first quarter was tight, and when the buzzer rang the Generals were only up 17-12, but Richard Winn’s dismal second quarter hampered a comeback.

Richard Winn only scored four points in the second period, and three of those came from Taylor Spires. Spires and Meredith Pope both had eight points. Lydia Wilder’s nine points led the team.

After the lackluster second quarter, Richard Winn went into the half trailing 29-16, and Thomas Sumter extended the lead out to 43-23 by the end of the third.

Richard Winn nearly cut the lead to single digits late in the fourth, but the time ran out on their comeback effort.
