Eagles struggle in Beaufort

BEAUFORT – The Eagles had a strong showing in their week-one performance, but over the last two weeks, defensive mishaps have cost them big. After the 68-66 loss last week, the Eagles gave up 68 points again this week to Beaufort Academy, but this time they only managed to answer back with 28 points.

Zack Taylor opened the game with one of just a handful of positive Richard Winn plays. He found the end-zone just four minutes into the game when he scrambled out of the pocket for a massive 73-yard touchdown. That was the last Richard Winn score until the four minute mark in the second quarter.

The RWA scoring gap opened the window for a 27-0 run for Beaufort that began with a couple of passing touchdowns. Beaufort led 14-6 at the end of one, and they padded the lead in the second quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns from 19 and 45 yards out.

Luke Martin broke the Eagles’ near 16-minute scoreless streak with a 44-yard touchdown and put the Eagles back within two touchdowns. Less than a minute later, Beaufort answered back in a big way. They caught a breakdown in the RWA secondary and exploited it for a 52-yard score. The long score put Beaufort up 34-14 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Beaufort rang the Eagles defense up for another 50-plus yard score. Instead of by air, the next touchdown was a 55-yard rushing score that landed RWA in a 14-40 hole.

Dru Caldwell hit a couple of 20-plus yard passes on the next Richard Winn drive and eventually set Luke Martin for a three-yard touchdown, his second touchdown of the game. Martin also had 54 yards on five carries.

The Eagles’ defense was not able to keep the Beaufort high-caliber offense clamped down, and they replied with back-to-back scoring drives. Caldwell continued to look sharp for Richard Winn and put up a 53-yard touchdown in the fourth. Caldwell went four for seven for 109 yards with the one touchdown.

Again, the Beaufort offense had a scathing answer to the Richard Winn score. Just over a minute after the Caldwell touchdown, Beaufort found the end-zone on a 45-yard rush. Then, on their next drive, they promptly struck with a 75-yard touchdown.

Richard Winn is back on the road on Friday against Jefferson Davis Academy.
