Cougars escape with win

BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood Redhawks tasted defeat for the first time last week against their region foe South Pointe, but Friday night the Redhawks looked to rebound against the York Cougars. Defense dominated the night for both teams, but the Cougars ultimately escaped the defensive puzzle with a narrow 14-6 victory. Westwood’s record fell to 4-2 overall, and 0-2 in region 3-4A play after the loss.

York broke the first half scoring drought in the second quarter. The Cougars’ senior running back Stephen Oglesby broke the plane on a three-yard touchdown to give York the early lead. Later in the second, York’s Ethan Mitchell found Khalil Ellis on a seven-yard touchdown strike.

A 24-yard touchdown pass from Ahmon Green to Cameron Smith brought the Redhawks back within eight. An illegal-block in the back penalty negated a potential tying score in the second half. Later in that same drive, the Cougars came up with an interception in the end-zone, and that would be Westwood’s last serious threat to the York defense. The interception was one of two Redhawk turnovers on the night.

Next up for Westwood is a televised road-game showdown with the Ridge View Blazers. The game will be featured as a part of WACH FOX’s Friday Night Rivals series.
