Eagles step up in second half to get W

WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn boys began play in the annual Richard Winn Christmas Tournament against Providence Athletic Club. Darius Boyd and Providence’s Banks Fryer had a shoot-out. Fryer outscored Boyd by a narrow margin, but the Eagles easily handled the Panthers en-route to 59-43 win.

Dru Caldwell came out of the gates blazing for the Eagles. He sank three shots from behind the perimeter in the first quarter and helped Richard Winn to a 14-12 lead after one. Both offenses struggled to get anything going in the second quarter, and the Eagles carried a 24-20 lead into halftime.

Providence was still just a step behind the Eagles in the third quarter. Boyd began to heat up in third, scoring seven of his 22 points in the period. Boyd and Hudson Wade combined to put the game away in the fourth.

Boyd had 11 points in the fourth and a shot a perfect 7-7 from the charity strip in the final quarter. Wade had 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, and he shot 5-7 from the free throw line in the final eight minutes. Fryer had a game high 26 points, and Boyd led the Eagles in scoring.
