Lugoff bests Griffins

WINNSBORO – The Fairfield Central Griffins met with the Lugoff-Elgin Demons on Tuesday night. The teams battled neck-and-neck for most of the game, but eventually the Demons proved to be too much. Lugoff’s Zarius Salmond picked apart the Griffins defense, and his 26-point night was a pivotal factor in the Demons’ 61-50 win.

Melvin Peay knocked down the first bucket of the game, but the Demons answered with a 6-0 run. Sintell Quattlebaum knocked down a pair of three throws to give Fairfield a 13-12 lead late in the first, but Austin Shilhavy answered back before the buzzer to give Lugoff a 14-13 lead at the end of one.

The second quarter proved to be more back-and-forth action. Salmond had 10 points for the Demons in the second, but the Griffins had the game tied up at 27 when at the half. Griffin Charlie Cason came to life in the third quarter. He knocked down two trifectas in the third, and had 10 of his team-high 14 points.

Despite Cason’s offensive performance in the third, Lugoff still forged their lead behind Salmond’s hot hand. Salmond had six points in the third and was one of six Demons to score in the period. Lugoff led 46-41 headed into the final eight minutes.

Fairfield could not solve the Demons’ defensive puzzle in the fourth, and they only managed to put together a nine-point quarter. Jordan Williams had six points for Lugoff in the fourth, and effectively sealed up the Demons’ win.
