Bengals take down RNE, fall to Blazers

COLUMBIA – Blythewood basketball got off to a 1-1 start in their first week of regular season action last week.

The Bengals traveled to Richland Northeast to open the season on Wednesday and came away with a 37-34 win. After falling behind 4-11 in the first quarter, the Bengals charged their way to halftime, outscoring the Cavaliers 13-3 in the second quarter for a 15-14 lead at halftime.

Both teams had their biggest offensive output in the third quarter, but Blythewood outscored RNE 16-12 to hold their lead by five at the end of three. Richland Northeast outscored Blythewood 8-6 in the final quarter but fell just short of a comeback.

Blythewood opened home play on Friday against Richland 2 rival Ridge View High School. The Blazers proved too much for the Bengal team as they took a 77-67 win.

Blythewood was back in action against West Florence on Saturday at the Cardinal Newman Showcase. The Bengals led 24-20 at the intermission and held on for a 50-42 final score.

Lower Richland hosted Blythewood on Monday to open the week’s play. The Diamond Hornets trailed Blythewood 13-14 after one quarter of play, and both teams put up 15 in the second quarter for a 29-28 halftime score.

Lower Richland put up 16 points to Blythewood’s 11 in the third quarter to take the lead, and a 14-13 advantage in the fourth gave the Diamond Hornets the 58-53 win.

Blythewood hosted Richland Northeast on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time.

The Bengals host cross-town rivals Westwood on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.


COLUMBIA – In a season-opener to remember, Blythewood girls basketball battled their way past Richland Northeast for a 38-35 win last Wednesday.

The Bengals hosted Ridge View on Friday in their home opener. The Blazers blazed through the first quarter with a 17-7 lead, but Blythewood’s offensive and defensive output improved in the second quarter as they matched Ridge View’s 13 points. The Blazers led 30-20 at halftime.

Blythewood fell further behind in the third quarter after a 13-5 performance. Ridgeview’s 14 points in the final period put the game away and the Bengals picked up their first loss of the season by a score of 57-33.

Lower Richland hosted Blythewood for some early-season, non-conference action on Monday.  The low-scoring game turned in favor of the Diamond Hornets as they took a 29-13 win. Blythewood moved to 1-2 on the season following the loss.

The Bengals hosted Richland Northeast for a rematch on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time. They will host cross-town rival Westwood High School on Friday. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
