COVID case forces cancellation of Dreher-Westwood game

BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood football team’s home game against Dreher Friday—along with senior night ceremonies—was cancelled the night due to a COVID-19 protocol. While senior night festivities played out at Richland 2 District Stadium Wednesday, the game will not be made up.

The Dreher game was originally scheduled for early in October, but when Westwood players were exposed to a Lugoff-Elgin player in the Redhawks’ 36-17 victory Oct. 2, the team had to quarantine and reschedule the Oct. 9 game with Dreher and the Oct. 16 game at Irmo for Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, respectively.

With the Dreher game off the schedule, the Redhawks (2-1 Region 4-4A and overall) hang their postseason hopes on beating Irmo at the Yellow Jackets’ W.C. Hawkins Stadium Friday night. Westwood (2-1) is in the playoff picture with a win over Irmo (3-1, 4-2).

The 4A postseason is set to kick off Nov. 13. The winner of Friday night’s game heads to Anderson to play Westside (5-0 Region 1-4A, 5-1 overall).
