BHS softball takes region, will host Mauldin to start playoffs

BLYTHEWOOD – When last Tuesday’s thunderstorms pushed Blythewood’s game against Spring Valley to Wednesday, it just delayed the Bengals’ Region 2-5A championship celebration.

The Bengals put up 13 runs in the first two innings and held off a Vikings rally to close out a 14-10 victory and the region championship.

Two days later, Blythewood walloped Ridge View 15-4 to close out the regular season with a 7-0 region mark and a 14-3 overall record.

The No.1 seed Bengals play host to Mauldin in the upper state District 2 tournament Friday at 7. They’ll play either Byrnes or Clover Monday in the four-team double-elimination bracket.

Against Spring Valley, Josie Smythe had three doubles and Anna Fridriksson had two. Hannah Black and Callie Boucom also doubled. Maya VanZyl went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs.

Lauren Hardy got the win for the Bengals, pitching 4 1/3 innings, and while giving up eight Spring Valley runs she struck out six. Josie Smythe pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up a run on one hit and striking out four.

Against Ridge View, Haley McCoy homered and tripled. Sofie Fridriksson also tripled. Hardy and Swanier both doubled.

Smythe got the win for the Bengals, 2-hitting the Blazers and striking out seven.
