Blythewood falls to Sumter in MLK Bash

COLUMBIA – Fresh off a 64-63 Region 4-5A victory at Northwestern Friday night, the Blythewood boys basketball team squared off with Sumter in the Crescent Construction MLK Bash Monday afternoon, falling 70-65 to the Gamecocks.

Blythewood (7-9, 1-0 Region 4-5A) got off to an 8-0 lead and eventually held a 14-10 lead, but from that point Sumter went on a 16-2 scoring run and held a 26-14 advantage about five minutes before the half. Jaylin Ricks hit on a jumper at the buzzer to cut the Gamecocks’ lead to 31-22 at halftime.

Sumter stretched its lead in the second half, but also saw the Bengals tear into it. Blythewood came within three points of overtaking the Gamecocks, but Sumter’s Nakeem Isaac and others held the lead with foul shots in the closing minutes.

Isaac led Sumter (16-4, 2-0 Region 6-5A) with 20 points. Caleb Jenkins put up 12 points and Ahmari Samuel added 11.

Isaiah Williams led Blythewood with 19 points. Samaad Wright scored 15 points, Jermaine Nelson had 12 points and Randy Kelly finished the night with 11.

Blythewood played at Rock Hill Wednesday night and will play host to Spring Valley on Jan. 24 (game originally scheduled for Friday, but was postponed due to inclement weather) and Ridge View on Jan. 26.
