A Tree Grows in Blythewood

BLYTHEWOOD – When Becca Smith, executive director of Sustainable Midlands was recently looking to give away some free Bald Cypress trees around South Carolina, she reached out to Blythewood Town Councilman Donald Brock.

“So, here we are with 10 Bald Cypress trees,” Brock said. “We’ll plant them around the pond here in the park and these trees will age to anywhere from 600 to 1200 years.”

Gathered to help plant the trees were, from left: Doris Coleman, president of the Blythewood Historical Society; Town Councilman Sloan Griffin; Mayor Bryan Franklin; Smith; Frank Nesmeth, watershed manager for DHEC; Town Councilman Donald Brock; and Keith Bailey, former Blythewood Mayor and currently serving on the town’s Architectural Review Board.
