Rebels beat Griffins with walk-off single

PROSPERITY – After falling 10-0 at Chester on Friday, Fairfield faced Mid-Carolina on Tuesday in their latest road game.

Tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, Mid-Carolina clinched the 4-3 win with a walk-off single that scored one.

The Rebels got on the board first in the bottom of the second with an RBI single and added another run in the bottom of the fourth, but Fairfield took the lead in top of the fifth.

L Holley walked to lead off the game, and R Woodard followed suit. Both runners advanced on steals. Harrison reached fist on a dropped third strike, but Holley was tagged out at home. Woodard remained on second.

Harrison was picked off at first, but Woodard stole third. Gambrell walked to put runners on the corners. A single to third scored Woodard. Gambrell crossed the plate before a strikeout ended the rally.

The Griffins were unable to capitalize on a few hits in the remainder of the game, and Mid-Carolina clinched the win in the bottom of the seventh.

K Mobley took the loss for Fairfield on the mound. He faced 14 in 2.2 innings of work, allowing 2 hits and one run. He struck out two and walked four. The Griffins’ starting pitcher, J Warren, worked four innings, facing 20 batters. He allowed 8 hits, 3 runs and walked two.

Blake Gambrell led at the plate for Fairfield, batting 2-3. In what has become typical Griffin baserunning, Fairfield notched 8 stolen bases. Rylan Woodard led with three.

Fairfield was scheduled to host Lower Richland on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time. In their first meeting of the season, the Griffins ended the game early with a 23-5 win in the fourth. They will face Mid-Carolina again on Friday.
