Griffins beat Keenan and Westwood, drop games to Chester, York Prep

WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central packed in five games in a six-day stretch over the past week. They took down Keenan in a double-header on Wednesday, dropped a tight game to Chester on Thursday, squeaked past Westwood on Saturday and lost a three-run game to York Prep on Monday.

Adam Gonzalez shut down Keenan in game one on Wednesday as the Griffins took a 12-0 win. Gonzalez threw a complete game, facing 19 batters in five innings. He allowed no hits, struck out three and walked three.

An 8-run fourth inning came with RBIs from the bats of Graeme Douglas, Rylan Woodard, Gonzalez and Kelton Mobley.

Gonzalez and Douglas went 2-3 with a combined 6 runs batted in. L Holley had a triple.

The Griffins weren’t as dominant in game two against Keenan but claimed a comfortable 5-1 win.

Graeme Douglas got the win on the mound with five innings of work. He allowed four hits and one run and struck out five.

Jonathan Warren and Mobley led the Griffins at the plate with the team’s only hits in the game.

 Fairfield dropped a 2-1 game to Chester on Thursday. The Griffins pitching staff struck out 14 in the loss. Mobley’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored the Griffins’ only run to tie the game at 1, but Chester plated the winning run in the top of the 8th to take the win.

Warren and Mobley worked the mound, each striking out seven. Warren allowed three hits and a run. Mobley walked two, allowed one hit and one run.

Gonzalez and Sampson each went 1-2 on the night.

Fairfield took the lead late in Saturday’s game for an 11-10 win over Westwood. Tied at ten in the bottom of the sixth, the Griffins took the lead when Mobley was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and then scored on a wild pitch.

Rylan Woodard took the mound for Fairfield and worked five innings. He allowed six hits, seven runs (3 earned), and struck out four. Douglas pitched two innings of relief. He faced 13 batters, struck out 1, allowed 6 hits, three runs (3 earned) and walked one.

Gambrell, Mobley and Sampson had multi-hit nights. Sampson had a homerun and a double. Gambrell also had a double.

The Griffins fell behind in the first inning of Monday’s game and could not recover in the 10-7 loss. York Prep racked up 11 hits to Fairfield’s 5. Gambrell doubled for the second game in a row; Gadson had a triple.

Gonzalez took the loss. He allowed 11 hits and eight runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five. Sampson threw two and a third innings of relief. He allowed no hits, struck out four and walked two.

The Griffins had a combined 13 runners steal 31 bases in the five-game stretch. Sampson and Mobley each totaled 5; Holley tallied 4.

The Griffins were set to face Great Falls on Wednesday, but scores were not available at press time. They will travel to Lancaster tonight. The SC High School League’s 3A state playoffs start May 3.
