Juneteenth celebration set for June 11 in Blythewood

BLYTHEWOOD – Blythewood’s first Juneteenth Block Party will happen Saturday at the U-Haul event grounds on Blythewood Road across from the Food Lion shopping center.

Sponsored by the Town of Blythewood and U-Haul, the event will include vendors, food trucks, games, live music, local performances and more.

The event is free, family friendly, and will feature national recording artists Chubb Rock and Meelah, lead singer of the Iconic Group 702.

As its name implies, Juneteenth commemorates the date June 19, which occurred in 1865. This day witnessed Union Army Major General Gordon Granger riding into Galveston, Texas, and informing slaves of their emancipation.

Located at 311 Blythewood Road, the event will happen from 11 a.m. to 5  p.m. on June 11.
