Letter: Pay Poll Workers

I was surprised to see the half page ad in several South Carolina newspapers the week of July 24 – 30 thanking the people of South Carolina for getting out and voting in the June elections.  I was even more surprised when I read that the Executive Director of the South Carolina Elections Commission, who appeared as the narrator of the ad, was thanking the poll workers.

It is strange because the poll managers who worked the 13 hour days for the Richland County Elections Office during the June elections…as of today, August 1, 2022…have not been paid for that work…at least I haven’t.

While the minimal pay cannot be the main reason any of us work the elections, it is disturbing that paying the ground level folks who make it happen is no priority for this government entity.

Phone calls and inquiries have resulted in responses of “it’s in processing.”

This kind of attitude does not instill confidence in a fair and secure election process for any of us.
