Sharpe, Wood make Fairfield Palmetto Proud

DOTHAN, ALABAMA – Mason Wood and John Ryan Sharpe, Lexington, SC residents with Fairfield County ties, wrapped up the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series earlier this week.

Wood, Sharpe and the SC team went 6-2 in the double-elimination tournament, defeating Dothan American (13-0), Alabama (1-0), Arkansas (10-0), Mississippi (4-1), Alabama again (4-0), and Florida (1-0) before losing their only two games to Georgia (1-3 and 2-5) in the championship round.

After losing to Alabama 1-5 in their third game, Georgia rallied to go 4-0 in elimination games and claim the title.

Wood, an outfielder for the team, went 10-21 in the tournament with a .476 batting average. He had 1 RBI and scored 4 runs in the eight-game stretch. Sharpe, a shortstop, batted 10-22 with a .455 average. He scored seven times for the SC team.

Sharpe, Wood and the team won the baserunning competition, which was held in a skills competition prior to starting tournament play.

In interviews before the tournament, Sharpe and Wood both talked about the fun they’ve had playing baseball this summer.

“I’m thankful that I just get to play the game,” Sharpe said, adding that hanging out with his teammates has been a bonus.

Wood said that “baseball is all about working hard and having fun.”
