Griffins pull off second-half comeback win

KERSHAW – For the first time since 2017, Fairfield Central sits at 2-0. After a home opener blowout against Carvers Bay in Week 0, the Griffins took to Kershaw to face Andrew Jackson in their second non-region bout of the season.

Down 13-21 at halftime, Fairfield Central’s defense stifled the Andrew Jackson offense in the second half. The Griffin offense put up 35 unanswered points to take a comeback 41-21 win over the Volunteers. 

Quarterback Cameron McMillon completed 23 of 38 passes for 393 yards and five touchdowns. He threw three interceptions.

The Griffin receivers put up big numbers in the win. Four receivers averaged over 16 yards per catch. TyDarian Greer had 148 yards in 9 receptions and a touchdown. Donovan Watkins had two touchdowns, amassing 106 yards on 6 carries. Jay Boyd had 86 yards on 4 receptions and a touchdown. Roger Burns hauled in a 35 yard pass to round out the Griffins’ receiving touchdowns.

Stephano Gadsden had Fairfield’s only rushing touchdown of the night, tallying 16 yards on 5 carries. Kensley Copeland handled most of the legwork against the Vols, rushing 77 yards on 17 carries.

Junior Miles Robertson, senior Stephano Gadsden and junior Amos Bell led the Griffin defense. Robertson had an interception, 10 solo tackles and 4 assists for 14 on the night. Gadsden had 13 tackles, 11. Bell had 12 tackles. JaShaun Manning (11) and Steven Gadsden (10) both hit double digits in tackles. Donovan Watkins tallied 9 tackles, and CJ Sampson, Josh Green and Jalian Yarborough had eight each. Stephano Gadsden, Sampson and Robertson were also credited with QB hurries.

Now 2-0 on the season, Fairfield is set to host Chester at E.AK. McLendon Stadium on Friday. The Cyclones edged Fort Mill 22-17 on Friday for their first win of the season. They fell to Lancaster 16-24 in Week 0.

Kickoff for Friday’s 321-rivalry game is at 7:30 p.m.
