WINNSBORO – Richard Winn’s boys team played the lone varsity contest on Tuesday night when the W.W. King Academy Knights rolled into town, and they put on a show.
With no varsity girls team to compete with the Eagles’ squad, the boys took the court early, but they didn’t take it easy.
Seniors Drew Spires and Miller Stuck put up 13 and 12 points in the first quarter as the Eagles led 28-5 heading into the second quarter. Richard Winn stretched the lead to 47-11 by halftime. The second half was more of the same on offense, but the Eagles held King scoreless in the third and allowed only five points in the fourth. The win was decisive: 74-16.
Spires led scorers with 22 points. Stuck followed with 14 and Bennett Nicholson had 10. Junior Justin Autry led with six rebounds.
The Eagles combined for 16 blocked shots on the night – Stuck had five; Ethan Steward had four. Stuck also had nine assists on the night.
With no game on the books for Tuesday, the Eagles girls had time to recoup from their Thursday night loss to defending SCISA A state champion Cambridge Academy.
Though they defeated Cambridge at home earlier in the season, the results of the road game in Greenwood were different. Cambridge avenged their early-season loss with a 52-30 final.
Sophomore Abby Lewis led Eagle scorers with 10 points. Senior Meagan Brigman had seven rebounds, six points and three blocked shots. Brinson Baker also had six points.
Richard Winn’s boys followed the girls’ loss with a dominant 77-46 win in Greenwood. Spires had 23 points on the night. Junior Charlie Bonds had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Stuck had 12 points and nine assists, and Steward scored 10.
The Eagle boys gear up for a pivotal region game at Newberry Academy on Friday as they battle for top spot in standings. Richard Winn (9-1) handed Newberry (7-1) their only loss of the season in early December with a 35-17 final. The Eagle girls (4-2) took down Newberry (2-9) by a 43-10 margin in their first meeting. The girls currently sit at third in region standings.
The girls’ game in Newberry is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
With only one non-conference game remaining on their schedule (Jan. 30 at Hawthorne Christian Academy) , both Eagle teams seek wins to cement their standings in the region and make a bid for a good seeding in SCISA playoffs.
