LAKE CITY – A Winnsboro artist and four other artists were invited last December by the Lake City Alliance to produce Plein air paintings during the ‘Shop Lake City’ Christmas holiday celebration – an annual event for Lake City, SC.
The artists were told they could paint anywhere in the city they chose so long as shoppers could see them and talk to them. The idea was for the artists to capture the shoppers in real time.
Plein Air painting goes back for hundreds of years but was made more popular by French Impressionist artists who painted in the landscape in the open air, capturing light as it changed throughout the day.
“The town itself was beautifully decorated and shoppers were everywhere, enjoying being painted as much as we enjoyed painting them,” Yongue said.
Yongue said she chose a scene on Main Street in the downtown area that had a corridor alley decorated with lights and holiday garland.
“My painting included two ladies with packages strolling by,” Yongue said.
This week Yongue was notified that the Town of Lake City has purchased her painting her 16”x20” painting and plans to include it in promotional material for future events.
