GREENWOOD – After a Friday night blowout win over Wardlaw propelled them into the SCSIA A Region IV tournament championship, the Eagles claimed their spot atop the tournament with a three-point win over Our Lady of the Rosary on Saturday.
The Eagles led 11-6 after a quarter of play and extended the lead to 24-16 by halftime. They still held an eight-point lead after the third quarter (40-32) and looked to push forward in the fourth. The Lions had different plans. They shut down Richard Winn’s offense in the fourth quarter, holding the Eagles to only a free throw in the final period.
The Eagles eight-point lead dwindled as time ticked, but they held on for a 41-38 final to claim their second region championship title of the season.
Seniors Drew Spires and Miller Stuck led the Eagle offense with 11 points each. Charlie Bonds had nine points.
Spires and Stuck were named to the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Bennett Nicholson was named Tournament MVP.
Nicholson put up 14 points in Friday’s win over Wardlaw. Spires led with 19. Justin Autry had nine.
After defeating Our Lady of the Rosary 38-17 on Tuesday, the Eagle girls lost their quest for a Region Tournament title on Friday night when they fell by a four-point margin to Cambridge Academy.
Delaney Young led with 12 points in Friday’s loss. Meagan Brigman had 10. Brigman was named to the All Tournament team.
Both Richard Winn teams look ahead to the SCISA 1A State tournament, which begins on Friday, Feb. 16.
The Eagle girls will see action first as they face Curtis Baptist at Ben Lippen on Friday. The boys will play against Holly Hill Academy at Wilson Hall on Saturday.
