NEWBERRY – The Richard Winn boys team clinched their third consecutive region title on Monday as they wrapped regular season play with a(nother) blowout region win.

The Eagles dominated from tipoff, leading 26-3 after a quarter, finishing with a 77-38 final. Drew Spires led scorers with 20 points. Miller Stuck and Josh Tyndall had ten apiece.

The game was their final in a quick three-game stretch of region opponents.

On Friday, the Eagles beat Anderson Christian 55-23 in Anderson. Spires put up 20 points in the win. Bennett Nicholson had 12.

King Academy was Thursday’s victim. Richard Winn took the Knights out with a 62-26 final. Spires led with 14 points. Stuck added ten; Tyndall put up nine.

The Eagles finish regular season play with only one loss and look to make a run for the Region Tournament title this weekend before moving into SCISA A playoffs.

The Eagle girls finished regular season play with a pair of wins. After knocking off Hawthorne Christian Academy last Tuesday, they took down Wardlaw 48-39.

Wardlaw squeezed past the Richard Winn squad by just four points two weeks ago; this time the Eagles found redemption in Winnsboro for the nine-point win.

Sophomore Abby Lewis led Eagle scorers with 19 points. Senior Meagan Brigman had 17. Brigman was also honored with a commemorative ball for her 500th career rebound.

With a third place finish in the region, the Eagle girls entered the region tournament on Tuesday. They faced off with No.6 Our Lady of the Rosary in Newberry and came away with a 38-17 win over the Lions. Brigman and Lewis had eleven points apiece.

The tournament win pits the Eagles (6-4) against No.2 Cambridge Academy (7-3) on Friday. Richard Winn took down the defending state champion Cougars by three points in the early season. Cambridge responded with a win on their home court in January.

Tipoff Friday is set for 3:30 p.m.  The winner will advance to the Region Tournament Championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Christian School in Greenwood.

After a first place region finish and receiving a bye, the Eagle boys see their first action against Wardlaw in the region tournament on Friday at 8 p.m. in Newberry. The winner advances to a 5:30 p.m. championship game on Saturday in Greenwood.
