WINNSBORO – It was a big night – senior athletes honored, a 1000th career point recorded, and region standings were on the line.

The Eagle girls opened the night with a tough Laurens Academy team. Undefeated in region play, the Crusaders looked to solidify their first place finish in the region with a road game in Winnsboro. They did just that, taking a 40-20 win over the No. 3 Eagles, giving them their fourth loss in region play.

Senior Delaney Young led Eagle scorers with 9 points. She also had two blocked shots and a steal. Meagan Brigman had a team-high nine rebounds, along with two blocked shots and a steal. Sophomore Abby Lewis pulled seven rebounds.

With one region loss under their belts and a few games left to play, the Eagle boys looked to stay on course for a region title.  They took a dominant 65-24 win over the Crusaders.

Drew Spires hit his 1000th career point on senior night.

Senior Drew Spires led scorers with 33 points and joined the 1000 Point club with his 33rd career point.

The Eagles controlled both sides of the court, racking up a combined 29 rebounds, 16 steals and 13 assists. Miller Stuck tallied seven rebounds. He also had four assists, a steal and two blocked shots. Spires had a team-high six steals. Ethan Steward had five rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Bennett Nicholson had three assists and three steals.

Both Eagle teams hosted Hawthorne Christian Academy on Tuesday night, this time the Eagle girls finished in the win column.

Brinson Baker led the Eagle offense with 11 points and four assists en route to Richard Winn’s 59-40 win. Meagan Brigman put in 10 points and tallied 10 rebounds. Young scored nine points and had three assists. Freshman Haley Autry had nine rebounds in the win.

The Eagle boys had another big-win night, taking down the Hawks with a 50-24 final.

Spires led again with 18 points, followed by Stuck with 11. Spires had six rebounds, four steals and three assists on the night. Stuck had a team-high five assists along with five rebounds and three blocked shots. Steward tallied a team-leading four blocked shots. Charlie Bonds, a junior, had six rebounds.

Three region games remain for the boys’ team. They’ll travel to King Academy tonight, then Anderson Christian on Friday.
