Eagle softball picks up first win

WINNSBORO – Richard Winn’s varsity softball team picked up their first win of the season on March 26. The Eagles defeated cross-town opponent Midlands STEM Charter School 16-1 in a three-game stretch.

Midlands STEM scored one in the first inning on a fielder’s choice, but Richard Winn would halt the Maverick offense after the first.

The Eagles put up four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-1 lead, then stretched it to 11-1 in the bottom of the second with six hits. Five more runs in the bottom of the third closed the game via mercy rule.

Richard Winn’s Caroline Tolbert faced 13 batters from the circle in the three-inning stretch. She struck out three, walked one, allowed two hits and one run.

The Eagles hosted Wardlaw Academy for a region game on April 2.

The Patriots jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with two batters hit by pitches, two drawing walks, a single and a double, and a steal of home scored 11 runs.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Delaney Young singled to center. Meagan Brigman drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Langley Thompson followed with a line drive to right that scored Young. A flyout to left and a strikeout ended the inning.

Wardlaw put up four more in the top of the second, but Richard Winn responded with five in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 9. The Patriots plated three unanswered runs in the top of the third to go up 18-6.

Richard Winn scored six more over the next two innings but still fell short with a 21-12 final.

Tolbert pitched one inning. In 13 batters faced, she walked three, struck out one, allowed two hits and eight runs. Thompson came on in relief to throw four innings. She struck out three, walked eight, and allowed 13 runs (9 earned) on 7 hits.

The Eagles dropped their fourth game of the season on Tuesday with a 19-5 loss to Lee Academy. Meghan Guzzi had a team-high two RBIs off of a double to left.

Tolbert took the loss from the circle. She allowed 15 hits, 19 runs (18 earned), walked six and struck out three.

Richard Winn (1-4) hosted Chester High School on Wednesday, but the score was not available by The Voice’s press deadline. They will travel to Laurens on Friday for a region game.
