Eagles down Wardlaw, fall to YPA

WINNSBORO – Richard Winn baseball hosted York Prep (YPA) for a game on Monday and surrendered their second game of the season. Tied at three heading into the seventh, YPA scored four to take a 7-3 lead.

Miller Stuck took the mound for the Eagles. A leadoff single followed by a hit batter put runners on first and second. Stuck struck out the third batter, but walked the next to load the bases. A single scored two to give York Prep their first lead of the game. Stuck seated the next two batters to end the frame.

Stuck doubled to lead off for the Eagles. Bennett Nicholson drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Anthony Armstrong’s single to center scored Stuck, but the Eagles still trailed by one at the end of the first.

Junior Charlie Bonds struck next for Richard Winn with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2.

York Prep led off the fourth with a homer to put the Patriots back up by one.

The Eagles trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Turner Burchell singled to short. Owen Martin’s line drive single to center put runners on the corners. A bunt from Stone Gill scored Martin before two outs ended the inning at 3-3.

York Prep led off with back-to-back singles in the top of the seventh to go up 4-3. An Eagle fielding error put runners on first and third. The Patriots plated another run on a passed ball, then Stuck walked a batter. The Eagles got two outs before a York Prep double scored two more runs. A ground ball to shortstop ended the inning.

Stuck drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Nicholson singled to right to put runners on first and second. Two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice ended the game with the Eagles down 7-3.

Stuck faced 31 batters in six innings of work. He struck out 10, walked four, allowed seven hits and seven runs (4 earned). Martin faced four batters in the seventh inning. He allowed one hit.

The Eagles bounced back from the loss with double-header wins over region foe Wardlaw on Tuesday in Winnsboro.

Richard Winn took game one easily with a 15-0 final in four innings. Ethan Steward had two homeruns. Stuck homered and had a double.

Wardlaw managed score one run in game two to stretch it to five innings. Richard Winn got the win with an 11-1 final.

Charlie Bonds hit a two-run dinger and Stuck had a triple.

Armstrong got the win in game one. He struck out four batters and allowed three hits in four innings from the mound.

Burchell took the game-two win. He faced 19 batters in the five-inning stretch. He struck out four, allowed six hits and one run.

The Eagles (9-2) will break for the week then return to action at Laurens Academy on April 12 for a region game. They beat the Crusaders 14-0 in five innings in early March.
