COLUMBIA – Columbia Animal Services has chosen to commemorate this year’s National Pet Preparedness Month by educating the pet owners of Columbia about the dangers of hot weather for pets, information on how to keep pets and their families together in emergency situations, as well as educating about disaster preparedness amidst the start of the hurricane season.
During the hot hurricane season, it is important to be aware of what it takes to prevent heat stroke in your pets and to know how to be reunited with your pets in the event of an emergency situation where they are lost. This is why Columbia Animal Services is distributing small, helpful Heat Stroke Safety infographics about preventing heat stroke in pets, as well as providing a $10 microchip service for pets. This service is ongoing and has no end date.
Purchase a $10 microchip for your pet (no appointment required) at the front desk of Columbia Animal Services, 122 Humane Lane in Columbia, Mondays – Fridays, from noon to 5 p.m. (Richland County & City of Columbia residents only).
Microchips offer a permanent and effective form of identification for pets, significantly increasing their chances of being returned if lost or stolen. Pets with microchips are three times more likely to be reunited with their families than those without.
With each pet adoption and/or microchip purchased, an Emergency Pet Grab ‘N’ Go Bag will be included as an additional perk with your purchase (while supplies last)! Each “Go Bag” features a large label (one side in English, the other in Spanish), which once filled out by the pet owner, provides crucial information about their pet(s) in an emergency situation. In these bags, pet owners can store medications and other necessities for their pets. These bags have been provided and sponsored by Charleston Humane Society, No Kill South Carolina 2024, and Petco Love.
