Bengals fall in close one at Midland Valley

GRANITEVILLE – On the road Friday, Blythewood (1-1) held a 28-12 lead going into the fourth quarter before the Mustangs (2-0) rallied for 19 points and got within 36-31 in the final two minutes of the game.

Then, Xavier Geter completed the game-winning touchdown pass to Cameron Gleaton at the 1:11 mark for the Mustang win.

It was 4A Midland Valley’s second straight win at home over 5A teams. The Mustangs opened the season with a 46-21 win over J.L. Mann. They travel to another 5A team, Lexington, Friday.

Junior Blythewood quarterback James Veasey was 18-for-27 in passing for 153 yards and a touchdown. Veasey also rushed six times for 53 yards and two TDs.

Veasey’s touchdown pass was to sophomore Tay’Shawn Johnson, who had six catches for 64 yards. Senior Chance Johnson had six catches for 58 yards.

Sophomore Landyn Strong led all Bengals rushers with 162 yards and a score on 14 carries. Senior Braden Marye had seven carries for 24 yards and a touchdown.

The Bengal offense tallied 502 all-purpose yards in the game. They averaged 8.5 yards per catch and 8.9 yards per run.

Blythewood’s defense allowed 507 yards of total offense, racking up 75 tackles, 13 for loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. 

Junior Dillon Hutcherson led the Bengal defense with 9 tackles, one for loss. Senior William Perkins had eight tackles, two for loss. Amari Fisher, Michael Ford, and Robert Rowe had seven tackles each. Junior Jeremy Harris had a team-high four tackles for loss.

Senior Jeremy Harris and Ryan Hall tallied the Bengals’ three sacks. Harris accounted for two of those.

Junior James Willis forced a fumble, and senior Michael Ford recovered it for a five-yard gain.

Blythewood’s home opener Friday is against Fort Mill (2-0). The Yellow Jackets beat Chester 35-14 last week.
