WINNSBORO – Fairfield County Animal Control and Adoption Center was filled with wagging tails, laughter, and community spirit this past Saturday, Sept. 13, as well over a hundred of the community’s animal advocates gathered for the first-ever Paws for a Cause community fundraiser event that raised a little over $3,000 for the shelter.
The day brought together families, local organizations, and animal lovers from across the county in support of the shelter and its residents.
Among those lending their support were Hearts Unleashed, a nonprofit dedicated to providing the shelter with volunteers, fosters, transport, supplies, and fundraising, and A Helping Paw of Fairfield, a nonprofit focused on assisting elderly residents in need with supplies and food for their pets.
Perhaps the most heartwarming moments of the day came with special adoptions. Nolan, Duke, and Geb — once shelter residents — each found their forever homes as a result of the event, a powerful reminder of the mission behind Paws for a Cause.

Another highlight of the event was the chance to decorate cement paw prints. All 110 of the available paws were sold and painted in honor of beloved pets and in support of the shelter. The paw prints will be used to create a walking path through the outdoor areas of the center, leaving a lasting reminder of the community’s love for animals.

Guests enjoyed a lively after noon complete with delicious bites from local Pitmaster George King’s BBQ food truck, sweet treats from the ice cream truck, and music that kept the energy upbeat. Children spent the day playing alongside adoptable puppies, while several of the shelter’s longtime residents got a chance to shine. Zeus, the shelter’s 130-pound gentle giant, became a crowd favorite as he soaked up attention from kids and adults alike.
Adding to the excitement, the Fairfield County Fire Department brought out a fire truck for children to explore, and K9 Officer Dano and his deputy handler, Lt. Cox, gave demonstrations that captivated the audience.
The day also featured a silent auction and raffle, including a one-of-a-kind Christy Original painted heart and two beautifully donated baskets.
“With perfect weather and incredible community support, the event was a resounding success,” said Unleashed founder and President Heather Feltner. “It was heartwarming to see so many people come out to spend the day with us. Events like this show what we can achieve when the community rallies together for the animals of Fairfield County.
“All of at the shelter hopes – the momentum from Paws for a Cause will continue through more adoptions, volunteer involvement, and donations in the months ahead,” Feltner said.
