BLYTHEWOOD – The Westwood football team, fresh off a 42-0 whipping of Lakewood, took Richland Northeast to task at its home opener at the Redhawks’ District Two Stadium Friday night.
Sophomore running back Jovan Howard rushed 22 times for 210 yards and scored four touchdowns, and junior Angelo Rios had 101 rushing yards and a TD as Westwood unhorsed the Cavaliers 53-14.
Quentin McGill also had a touchdown run for the Redhawks (2-1).
Senior quarterback Carrington Carter was 10-for-15 for 87 yards and threw touchdown passes to seniors Tyrese Drakeford and Jaylen Donaldson. The Redhawks had 330 all-purpose yards.
Duke University commit Jayden Boyd had two interceptions. Shareef Pitt and Tyrese Drakeford had an interception each.
With quarterback Will Wilson now at North Carolina State, Richland Northeast’s offense was lacking. Isaiah Small scored a rushing touchdown early in the game to get the Cavaliers within 7-6 in the first quarter. Late in the third quarter and behind 47-6, RNE scored its second TD.
On Friday Westwood plays host to Airport (0-3), which fell 40-0 at Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week. Richland Northeast (0-3) plays host to Nation Ford (2-1) Friday.
