SUMTER – Westwood’s football team traveled to Sumter and blistered Lakewood 42-0 Friday night for Stephen Burris’s first victory as the coach of the Redhawks (1-1).
Up 14-0 after a quarter of play, Westwood led the Gators (0-2) 35-0 at halftime. They added one more score in the third quarter for the 42-0 final.
Westwood quarterback Carrington Carter put together the best start of his career, passing 20-for-25 for 170 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Carter led the Redhawk offense for 199 all-purpose yards – 125 through the air and 74 on the ground.
Angelo Rios rushed 14 times for 85 yards and three touchdowns and had five catches for 57 yards and a score.
Besides Rios, Carter connected with Cam Bennett three times for 19 yards and one touchdown and Cohen Scott for a 14 yard score. Quentin McGill had five receptions for 28 yards.
The Redhawks play their home opener Friday against Richland Northeast. The Cavaliers are coming off a 35-13 loss at Crestwood.
