BATESBURG – Richard Winn faced an uphill battle on the road on Oct. 16, falling 54-16 to a formidable King Academy team.

King came out firing and quickly established control of the game. They struck early in the first quarter, converting the two-point attempt for an 8-0 lead. The Knights continued their offensive surge with another quick score and a successful two-point conversion, going up 16-0, and added another quick score. By the end of the first quarter, King put up 30 unanswered points.

The Eagles managed to get on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Eli Smith broke through for a touchdown. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the lead 30-8, but King’s offense stayed hot. By halftime, the Eagles trailed 46-16. The Knights kept the Eagles grounded throughout the second half and claimed a 54-16 region win.

In what reads more like a basketball score than football, Richard Winn fell to Laurens Academy at home on last Friday in a narrow two-score loss.

At the end of the first quarter, Laurens held a 22-14 lead. Up 30-22 at halftime, the Crusaders held only a 36-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter scoring fest, Laurens put up 42 points to the Eagles’ 34 to claim the 78-64 win.

The losses move the Eagles to 4-5 on the season, 1-2 in their SCISA 8-man region, seating them in the middle of the pack with only a Halloween night game against Wardlaw Academy remaining. The Eagles escaped a narrow 35-34 win over Wardlaw (also 1-2 in region play), when they faced off in September.

Laurens now sits atop the leaderboard with King, both 3-0 in region play. The two teams will battle for the region title on Friday.
