LANCASTER – If they hadn’t already, Fairfield Central Griffins made a name for themselves on the road last week against Andrew Jackson, shutting out the Volunteers 36-0 in the second round of the SC High School League’s 2A playoffs.
The result was nothing new for the Griffins, who, now 9-3, have won eight games by 29 points or more this season. Led by Kaden Diggs, Ty’Quarius Shannon, and Derek Cammon Fairfield’s offense racked tallied 318 all-purpose yards.
Diggs completed five of eight passes for 97 yards, connecting with Shannon, a junior, for 87 of those yards and three touchdowns. Senior Derek Cammon led the Griffins’ ground attack, rushing for 93 yards in 15 carries. Diggs picked up 44 yards for himself on 10 runs, and Kenyan Douglas had 59 yards in seven carriers. Four of Sidney Wilson’s five point-after attempts were good.
The Griffin defense tallied their sixth shutout of the season. They held the Volunteers to 158 yards of total offense, allowing only five yards on the ground. Interceptions from Brenton Mack, Kaylin Culp, and Martez Harrison kept the air threats at bay.
The Griffins, who shut out Andrew Jackson 35-0 at home earlier in the season, hit the road again Friday, this time to take on Clinton. The defending 2A champion Red Devils (9-3) beat Saluda 35-25 last week. With only eight teams remaining in the playoffs, a win will advance Fairfield to the Upper State Championship game on Nov. 28.
Last year Fairfield Central fell to Clinton 32-21 in the 2A upper state championship. The Red Devils moved on to beat Barnwell 35-6 in the 2A state championship game.
