COLUMBIA – In a gritty, defensive battle, Muller Road Middle School’s football team dethroned a champion on Wednesday, Nov. 5.  The Mustangs played four quarters of stifling defense; then one spectacular play helped them claim the Richland Two Middle School Football Championship.

Muller Road was locked in a defensive stalemate with Richland Two champion Longleaf Middle School. The breakthrough came in the second half with Muller Road’s Nolan Gary intercepted a Longleaf pass and returned it for a touchdown. Gary’s pick 6 would be the game’s only score, ending Longleaf’s quest for a repeat title.

Muller Road principal Brandon Ross praised the coaching staff for their leadership of the team.  “It was an incredible game, but at the end of the day our student-athletes remained disciplined and resilient,” he said in a post on Twitter.
