BLYTHEWOOD – With its most recent victory, a 57-43 win over defending 4A state champion Lancaster Saturday, the Westwood boys basketball team is off to a 6-0 start.
Senior Jayden Crews and Junior Cylen McLeod led the way with 15 points apiece. Senior Daytron Cockfield had 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Bruins.
McLeod leads the Redhawks in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game. Crews averages 13.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Cockfield averages 9.4 points and 7.8 rebounds.
Westwood finished 18-9 and a third-round run in the 5A Division 2 playoffs last season. Seven seniors including Crews, Cockfield, Quentin McGill and Bryson Hardy, return for this year’s team.
The young Westwood girls (5-2) went to Fairfield Central Friday and beat the Griffins 57-16. Sophomore Lyric Rogers had 16 points and eighth-grader Amari Alexander had 12 points.
Rogers leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game, and Alexander averages 9.6 points.
The Redhawks, who finished 14-15 but reached the third round of the 5A Division 2 playoffs last season, have four seniors, one junior, four sophomores, a freshman and two eighth-graders this year.
The boys and girls return to The Castle Friday to take on Richland Northeast.
