WINNSBORO (Jan. 27, 2016) – The Richard Winn Academy girls’ just run past an opponent and keep on going.

After demolishing King Academy 60-9 on Jan. 19 and Laurens Academy 48-38 on Jan. 21, the Lady Eagles knocked off non-region opponent Wardlaw 55-26 Tuesday night at the RWA gym.

“We jumped out pretty good,” Richard Winn head coach Jason Haltiwanger said. “What we’re trying to do regardless of who we play is to get a maximum effort out of every player. The girls did that, so I’m pleased. Regardless of the score, regardless of who we are playing, the effort is there.”

Center Jaycie Johnson scored 10 points and had three rebounds in the first quarter to help boost Richard Winn to a 22-2 advantage by the end of the opening frame. The Lady Eagles went into intermission with a 34-8 lead and stayed ahead of the Lady Patriots by double digits the rest of the way.

Johnson finished the night with 15 points to lead all scorers. Marion Walker-Coleman had 12 points.

“We got a lot of people in to play tonight,” Haltiwanger said. “It’s tough to balance it, because in the playoffs you’ve got to go four quarters. You don’t want to risk an injury on a big lead, so tonight I laid on the side of resting some of the starters.”

In the win over Laurens, the Lady Eagles had to step up their game.

“They gave us a good challenge. They’ve got good guards that can play,” Haltiwanger said. “Their point guard is so good that it’s tough for us to turn things over using our press. They’ve got a good scheme, with double-teaming Jaycie down low and guarding our point guard and making our wings beat them. Hopefully we’ll see them in the conference tournament.”

Friday night the Eagles play host to Anderson Christian.

“They’ve got a couple of good guards so we’ve got to make the shooters drivers and make the drivers shooters,” Haltiwanger said. “And we need to push the ball down the court and feed Jaycie inside.”
