Eagles find redemption at Newberry

WINNSBORO – Following a week-one loss to Cary Christian at home, Richard Winn football hit the road, looking for redemption.

The Eagles crossed over Broad River to Newberry Academy for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday, and the game was on.

The Newberry Eagles struck first, but the two-point conversion failed. Their 6-0 lead was short-lived when Richard Winn quarterback Bennett Nicholson ran in a touchdown. A successful two-point conversion gave the Eagles their first lead of the night.

Newberry answered back with a long run. This time, the two-point conversion was good and Newberry took a 14-8 lead.

Down by a score, Nicholson found Johnathan Bonds for a 15-yard score. A failed two-point conversion left the score knotted at 14 as the first quarter ended.

Nicholson connected with Bonds again, this time for a 35-yard touchdown. The points after failed; Richard Winn went up 20-14.

On their following possession, Newberry broke away again for a long score and a two-point conversion to take a 22-20 lead.

Nicholson legged in another run, this time from 50 yards out. A good two-point conversion gave the Eagles a 28-22 cushion at halftime.

After receiving the ball first in the second half, the Eagles added to their lead on another long Nicholson run and a successful conversion. Then Nicholson punched in another to put Richard Winn up 44-22.

Nicholson connected with Dylan Albert for a 30-yard score to go up 50-22 at the end of the third. Eli Smith added six more in the fourth and the Eagles led 58-22 as time dwindled. Newberry managed to score again, but the deficit remained as Richard Winn took the 58-30 game two win.

Richard Winn looks to continue their redemption tour on Friday at home against King Academy. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
