BLYTHEWOOD – In a shootout at Blythewood’s District Two Stadium Friday night, Lugoff-Elgin quarterback Zach Williams found with E.J. Richardson for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 6:14 left in the game to get past the Bengals 42-38.
That score closed out a wild offensive game for both teams. Blythewood (3-4, 1-2 Region 5-5A) trailed the Demons 21-16 but answered Lugoff-Elgin (4-3, 1-2) score for score in the second half—until the end.
Landyn Strong closed out a short scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Bengals up 22-21 on Blythewood’s first possession of the second half.
Later, with the Demons up 28-22, James Veasey hit Chance Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 28 midway through the third quarter.
After Lugoff-Elgin scored again to take a 35-28 lead, Blythewood placekicker Ashton Davis nailed a 35-yard field goal closed the gap to 35-21 to start the fourth quarter.
The Bengals defense forced a punt, then the offense knocked out a 7-play, 80-yard scoring drive capped with a 9-yard Veasey touchdown run with 9:19 to play.
Once again, the Demons drove down the field and scored the go-ahead touchdown, and the Lugoff-Elgin defense kept the Bengals out of the end zone for the rest of the game.
Veasey was 16-for-22 in passing for 219 yards and two touchdowns, to Johnson and to Ryan Hall. He also rushed 14 times for 62 yards and a score. Strong had 10 carries for 69 yards and two scores. Daquan Davis had a safety.
The Williams-Richardson TD connection was one of four Williams touchdown passes to the junior wide receiver, who also rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. Williams had 10 catches for 215 yards and four scores to finish the night with 379 all-purpose yards.
The sophomore quarterback completed 18 of 33 passes for 310 yards.
