COLUMBIA – Blythewood’s boys and girls swim teams took part in the 5A Division I state swimming championships at the University of South Carolina’s Sol Blatt Natatorium Thursday.
J.L. Mann’s boys and girls team won the 5A Division 1 state championship. The boys team won state with 423 total points, topping second-place Ashley Ridge’s 336 points.
The Patriots’ girls team won with a total of 286 points, ahead of second-place Clover’s 269 points.
The Blythewood boys finished ninth with 129.5 points.
For the boys, the 200-yard medley relay team of Logan Whitney, Andres Cubero, Peyton Russel and Dylan Thompson finished seventh with a time of 1:42.06.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Cubero, Russel, Thompson and Whitney finished 10th with a time of 1:35.62.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Tanner Toogood, Mason Litton, Peterson Carter and Nathan Whitney finished 17th with a time of 3:47.31.
Cubero finished third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.9 and sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.52.
Logan Whitney finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.81, and Russel took 11th in the event with a time of 1:03.29.
The Blythewood girls finished 15th with 116 points.
For the girls, the 200 medley team of Scarlette Hankwitz, Abby Christian, Catherine Maradei, and Gracie Thames finished 13th with a time of 1:56.81.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Christian, Catherine Maradei, Addison Maradei, and Thames finished 9th with a time of 1:46.48
The 400 freestyle relay team of Anya Hutchinson, Eleanor Sanders, Ava Sanders, and Addison Maradei finished 16th with a time of 4:06.09.
Abby finished sixth in the 200 intermediate medley with a time of 2:14.96, and took seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:11.36.
Catherine Maradei finished sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:31.41.
Thames finished 18th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:08.70.
5A Division 2 Meet
Sean Dalrymple, representing Westwood in the boys 5A Division 2 swimming championships placed in four events to put the school in 16th place with 67 points.
Dalrymple took third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.87, took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.06, took seventh in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:51.75, and placed 11th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.06.
For the Westwood girls, the only swimmer, Maliha Mpofu-Weaver, took 19th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.42.
