Eagles look to bounce back after Jan. 15 losses

WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Academy Eagles are gearing up for a three-game road stretch as they look to bounce back from a series of tough matchups.

The Eagle girls faced a challenge on Jan. 15, traveling to take on Greenwood Christian, a 3A powerhouse. They fell 40-21.  They currently sit at 1-1 in region play, trailing only Wardlaw Academy (2-0), who handed the Eagles a tight 67-63 overtime loss earlier this month.

The Eagle boys faced a tough test on Jan. 15, falling to region foe Anderson Christian 56-41. Dylan Wood and Bennett Nicholson led scoring with eight points apiece. Nicholson added six rebounds and three steals. Walker Blackwelder, a freshman, had a team-high eight rebounds and three steals to go along with five points.

The Eagle boys currently sit at 2-3 in region play (7-6 overall), placing them in fifth in the region, just ahead of Wardlaw (0-5). Cambridge Academy (5-1) currently sits atop the region leaderboard.

The road ahead will be an endurance test for both teams. The Eagles begin a three-game away stretch Friday at Newberry Academy. The girls’ game is scheduled for a 6:15 p.m. tip-off, with the boys to follow.

Following the trip to Newberry, the Eagles will remain on the road for two non-region contests next week, traveling to Holly Hill on Jan. 26 and Laurens Academy on Jan. 29 before returning to close out region action at home against Wardlaw in early Feb.
