Midlands STEM launches gardening, recycling programs

WINNSBORO – Midlands STEM 4H program has been awarded a grant that will fully fund a school garden this spring. The grant is funded through the SC Department of Environment’s School’s Garden Education and Assistance Program! In partnership with SC Farm to School and the SC Department of Education.

Work on the garden will begin next month. Garden team members Lauren Beck, Marcia Campbell, and Hugh Collins will spend the month of March in training with Clemson learning how to begin and sustain a successful school garden.

The beds will be installed in April with the first seedlings planted in May.

Midlands STEM was one of 16 schools to receive the grant out of the 65 schools across the state that applied for the program.

The goal of the gardening program is for students to learn how to grow their own food and how to manage and maintain a garden.

The school also received a grant from the SC Department of Environmental Services to implement a school-wide recycling program as well as a cafeteria share table. The new bins and signs will appear around the school as the program is launched to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
