BLYTHEWOOD — Blythewood softball (6-2, 5-0) pulled out a win against the Demons (3-8, 1-4), with Molly Wolf’s 3-run home run in the fifth inning lifting the Bengals to an 8-7 victory.
Wolf’s homer saved the Bengals, who had a 5-0 lead before falling behind 7-5.
“We’ve had good bunts, had runners moved around, we put the ball in play and we didn’t have any strikeouts,” Blythewood head coach Jordan Atkinson said, “but little things are making the difference in games. Not putting teams away, letting teams hang around and stay in it. Defense let us down at times, but our pitchers kept us in it and our bats definitely saved us tonight.”
Blythewood took a 5-0 lead after a 3-run second inning and a 2-run third. Lugoff-Elgin got back in the game with three runs in the fourth. The Demons scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gabby Cadena hit a one-out single and A Davis reached base on an infield error. After H Ortiz flied out, Wolf came to bat and smacked a 2-out home run that just cleared the fence in centerfield.
“I didn’t think it was going to have the height, but I’m sure glad it did,” Bengals head coach Jordan Atkinson said.
Starting pitcher Charlotte Martin worked four innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out four. Lily Zell, who got the win in Thursday’s 9-3 win over Spring Valley, took the circle to start the fourth. She gave up four runs on four hits but retired the Demons in order in the sixth and seventh innings. She struck out three and walked one.
Atkinson credited both pitchers for staying focused in spite of lead changes, and added that this year’s lineup has been producing timely hits and making good decisions on the base paths.
“What’s been nice is that 1 through 9 we’ve got production,” Atkinson said. “If the top (of the lineup) is not on, then the bottom is on. And today we’ve had production from all nine spots.”
Every batter in the Blythewood lineup either got a hit or scored a run Tuesday.
Blythewood heads to Lugoff-Elgin Thursday, then Heathwood Hall Monday.
